We just got back from our yearly 'Weekend without Kids' ... also known as 'what life used to be like'. All kidding aside, such weekends are so very valuable to a couple, especially when you can get bogged down in the everyday challenges of everyday life with kids, it is important to take some time for your relationship.
This year we decided to head to the Fränkische Schweiz...not to far from home. Eva's parents came down to take care of the kids (thanks!). After we left home, we actually did some shopping, and we stumbled on a great deal on a tent (I want to take Emily AND Quinn camping, and my small tent would be a bit tight for the three of us).
After settling into our hotel (Landhaus Sponsel Regus: www.sponsel-regus.de/), we took a quick hike before dinner. There were a few hiking paths in the area, and we could even find a few caches.
Dinner was absolutely amazing! There was the standard salad and cheese bar...but the ingredients were very fresh and from the area. Dinner was simply amazing...served on unique dishes, and presented to us. At first, we thought that the portions were small, but the waitress (who belonged to the family) asked us when we were about finished if we would like more. Yes. Then we got another full portion.
The next night, they had a Strudel Buffet. Since we went on a 11km hike, to catch the overlooks over Ebermannstadt, we were plenty hungry. Of course, after the hike, we headed to a biergarten for a refreshment, but didn't spoil our dinner.
The hike itself was the highlight of the trip (outside of perhaps the excellent food at the hotel), and it was really nice to enjoy the beauty of the overlooks, the old castle ruins, as well as the forest without a constant drone of 'Mama' and 'Papa' in the background...or the constant fear that someone will get hit with a stick.
Of course, it was nice to get back to the kids. Despite getting spoiled by Oma and Opa (they had ice cream before 11am today!), they were happy to see us...and they were even more excited by the new tent.
I'm already looking forward to the next camping weekend in our new tent. It will be Emily's first time camping with us, and I hope she enjoys it. Let's hope the weather will be nice next weekend!
